Soy and Breast Cancer

Posted by Chantel M.

Do you believe that soy can prevent breast cancer?. According to the study of "Dietary genistein negates the inhibitory effect of tamoxifen on growth of estrogen-dependent human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells implanted in athymic mice". by Ju YH, Doerge DR, Allred KF, Allred CD, Helferich WG. Cancer Res. 2002 May 1;62(9):2474-7., researchers found that Dietary genistein negated/overwhelmed the inhibitory effect of TAM on MCF-7 tumor growth, lowered E2 level in plasma, and increased expression of E-responsive genes (e.g., pS2, PR, and cyclin D1). Therefore, caution is warranted for postmenopausal women consuming dietary genistein while on TAM therapy for E-responsive breast cancer.
Now you have it. Prevention is better than treatment, so make and drink your soy drink. It does not taste too bad,

  1. Hmmmm....I was told to go off soy because of the risk of cancer in my midlife. So many varying opinions, even the medical community cannot agree...*sigh*

  2. Is the majority of the mainstream medical community really up to date on these studies?

The largest epidemiological study yet of breast cancer survivors was published last year and found a significant association between soy consumption of 10 mg/isoflavones/day and a reduced risk of recurrence.

Human studies on tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors (as opposed to studies in the lab) have shown that these drugs in combo with soy may be helpful, especially in certain cases. (I'm still analyzing and preparing a piece on the nuances of the soy controversy and will soon post an article, with references, on my blog.)

As a health journalist and fellow estrogen-sensitive cancer survivor, I've also been communicating with the main researchers on the benefits of ground flaxseed to regulate hormones and reduce risk of recurrence. Maybe you want to share this information on those studies with your doctor?

Let us know what your doctor says.
