Posted by Chantel M. Contributed by US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health

Dr. Andres A,and the research team at Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center, Little Rock in the study of Developmental Status of 1-Year-Old Infants Fed Breast Milk, Cow's Milk Formula, or Soy Formula, posted in US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, showed that all scores on developmental testing were within established normal ranges and that MF and SF groups did not differ significantly. Furthermore, this study demonstrated a slight advantage of BF infants on cognitive development compared with formula-fed infants.

  1. Since all formulas seem to contain DHA, essential fatty acids, and breast milk also does, the hidden truth in the research may be that breast milk is a better delivery medium or carrier molecule set to get fatty acid nutrients into infants' brain cells/tissues. If I'm wrong, it's still a good study comparing natural nutrition forms with synthetic, although there's nothing wrong with formula feeding, and some hospital staff mix breast milk and formula together, although some people think live milk immune cells mount an immune response against the formula constituents or even micellize in clumps, so to speak. I think using both separately is a good plan, since few people eat 5 servings a day of fruits/vegetables and the formula is a good multivitamin/meal replacement product. Aren't some sports health protein powders and paleo products adult versions of formula that cover you if you don't eat right nutrient sources? Trevor Smith, FNP
