Indian Shrimp Curry Recipe - Simple, Delicious, and Perfect

If you love curry as much as I do, then you must know that there are few meals that can satisfy your palate as an Indian shrimp curry recipe. This recipe boasts of rich flavors and aroma that is equally matched by the rich colors of its ingredients - the greens and yellows of the curry, the bright red peppers, drenching the pure white rice and the pink shrimps. Shrimps are succulent yet firm in texture and invitingly sweet in flavor. It definitely adds a soothing element to the hotness of the curry. If you are a bit hesitant to try curry because you prefer your less spicy meals, then I have great news for you: curry is not naturally spicy; it is not even because of its own spice.
Indian shrimp curry recipe, and all other curry dishes for that matter, makes use of a spice blend referred to as masala powder. Garam masala is a generic name for the fusion of spices which typically includes red pepper, turmeric and cumin. Curry, as we all know, holds a special place as one of the world's most-loved dish. Its hotness is largely dependent on the amount of red pepper, and other hot additives like chilies. In many restaurants, and definitely in your own home, you are free to add and take off whatever spice you want, depending on your preference. This is the beauty of a curry dish; you can make your own special version of it! The variation of curry is introduced when you blend all the ingredients together.

In a workshop convened to assess evidence for the potential benefits of phytoestrogen-containing foods or supplements on diseases or conditions affecting older populations with preclinical, clinical, and epidemiologic data on the cardiovascular system, various cancers, bone diseases, and menopausal symptoms were the focus of the discussions, posted in PubMed, showed that based on the information presented, isoflavone-containing soy foods may have favorable effects on the cardiovascular system, but major knowledge gaps still exist regarding effects ofphytoestrogen supplements on bone diseases, various cancers, menopausal symptoms, and cognitive function.

Dairy-Free and Vegan Potato Salad Recipe With A Kick of An Unexpected Spice

This meat-free & dairy-free potato salad will have you getting rid of the usual & predictable conventional potato salad for sure. In the event your family holiday gatherings are anything like mine, people are asking "where is the potato salad" as soon as they hit the door. This dairy-free, Curried Potato dish is a far cry from the everyday "yellow" or "southern style" potato salad that you've been served year-end and year out. Add a little spice and a unique flavor to your holiday menu. Your guests will welcome the change!
Dairy-Free Curried Potato Salad Recipe:
Potato Salad Dressing:
Ingredients:
·Vegetable or Olive Oil for sautee
·Small chopped red onion
·1 chopped red bell pepper
·1/2 small finely chopped jalapeño pepper
·1 teaspoon celery salt
·1 teaspoon ground cumin
·1 teaspoon ground coriander
·1 teaspoon turmeric
·2 tablespoons of curry powder
·1 cup of raisins (make sure you soak them first in hot water)
·Fresh juice of 1 lime or lemon
·1 cup of Veganise
·2 teaspoons of chopped cilantro
Dressing Directions:
1. In a small skillet, drizzle oil, over medium heat, and allow to get warm. Add the onions, bell peppers, and jalapeño peppers. Cook vegetables until they are soft. Next, add the celery salt, cumin, coriander, turmeric, and curry powder. Cook for about 5 minutes. To de-glaze the pan and get the spices from the bottom of the pan, drizzle some lemon juice in the pan.
2. In a food processor or blender, add the vegetable mixture and raisins. Pulse until chopped and smooth. Add half of the lime or lemon juice and the veganaise and cilantro and continue to pulse. Next add the dressing to a bowl and add the remainder of the lime or lemon juice. Stir well and refrigerate.
Salad Ingredients:
·1 pound of cooked and cubed red skinned potatoes
·1/2 pkg of drained extra firm tofu
·1/2 cup of raisins (make sure these have been soaked in hot water)
·Chopped cilantro (optional)
Salad Directions:
1. In a large bowl, crumble the extra firm tofu (with your hands). Next, add the cubed potatoes, raisins and cilantro and toss well.
2. Next, add the dressing to the salad and mix well. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.

Effects of soy isoflavone supplementation on cognitive function in Chinese postmenopausal women

In a 6-month double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial with community-dwelling women aged 55 to 76 years; 191 eligible women were randomly assigned to receive a daily oral intake of 80 mg soy-derived isoflavones or an identical-appearing placebo for 6 months to investigate whether soy-derived isoflavone extract improves performance in cognitive function and quality of life in Chinese postmenopausal women, posted in PubMed, Indicated that this 6-month trial indicates that 80-mg soy-derived isoflavone supplementation did not improve performance on standard neuropsychological tests and overall quality of life in generally healthy Chinese postmenopausal women.

Effects of soy milk and isoflavone supplements on cognitive performance in healthy, postmenopausal women

In the study to investigate whether soy isoflavones (soy milk and supplement) could improve cognitive functioning in healthy, postmenopausal women, of a total of 79 postmenopausal women, 48-65 years of age, posted in PubMed, indicated that in contrast to predictions, soy isoflavones did not improve selective attention (Stroop task), visual long-term memory (pattern recognition), short-term visuospatial memory (Benton Visual Retention Test), or visuo-spatial working memory (color match task). Also, the soy milk group showed a decline in verbal working memory (Digit Ordering Task) compared to the soy supplement and control groups.

Eat Asian Food For Good Health

Crisp vegetable stir-fries from China, bowls of steaming noodle soup with mint and coriander from Vietnam, fiery jungle curries from Thailand, and fill-you-up sushi rolls from Japan. These are just some of the Asian dishes that are tempting our taste buds and winning the tick of approval from nutritionists around the globe.
With its emphasis on vegetables, rice, clear soups, noodles, fresh fruit, fish and lean meat; Asian food is light, yet filling. It is generally low in fat, with most recipes requiring only small amounts of vegetable oils for cooking. Sweets are healthier too, with none of the rich desserts and pastries of European cuisines. Traditionally, healthy snacks are eaten between meals to help avoid hunger pangs, and to spread food intake over the day.
Eating for a Healthy Heart
There are many reasons why nutritionists recommend Asian fare for a healthy heart:
  • Omega 3 fats from the prawns, scallops, mussels, crabs, abalones and other seafood that is so plentiful in Asia.
  • Vitamin E from cashews, peanuts, almonds and other nuts and seeds.
  • Phytoestrogens from tofu, tempeh and soy drinks.
  • Antioxidants from the many green vegetables, herbs, garlic, onions and green tea.
All these food factors combine to keep blood vessels clear and free of build-up, and to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. The total fat in Asian food tends to be low and, because vegetable oils are preferred for cooking, saturated fats are also kept to a minimum.

The abundance of vegetables, fiber-rich fresh herbs (all lightly cooked or served raw), antioxidants, and phytochemicals in the Asian diet, make it work in your favor to protect against many cancers and slow the aging process.

Healthy choices: Steamed dim sims or wontons, steamed fish with black bean sauce, combination vegetables, chow mein dishes, stir-fry meat, chicken or seafood dishes with vegetables, crab and corn soup, clear soup with noodles or dumplings, san choy bau, tofu tossed with vegetables, plain boiled rice, Chinese green tea, jasmine tea.
Eat occasionally: Deep-fried entrees such as prawn cutlets, fried dim sims, spring rolls, fried dishes such as sweet and sour, crispy skin chicken, fried rice, Peking duck, pork spare ribs, fried ice-cream.
Japanese
Healthy choices: Noodles with fish, chicken or pork, noodle soups, sashimi (raw tuna or salmon), steamboat dishes, teppanyaki-style barbecues, sushi nori rolls, steamed rice.
Eat occasionally: Tempura (deep-fried seafood and vegetables).
Vietnamese
Healthy choices: Clear hot soup (pho) with chicken or beef, noodle soups, meat, seafood or chicken salads, stir-fry meat or scallops with vegetables, fresh prawn rice paper rolls, grilled pork skewers, chicken with lemon grass, steamed ginger fish, stir-fried mixed vegetables, jasmine rice.
Eat occasionally: Coconut-based curries, deep-fried finger foods such as crab cakes and spring rolls.
Indian
Healthy choices: Dry curries of meat, chicken or vegetables, lean meat kebabs, tandoori chicken or lamb, dhal, naan and roti bread, boiled rice, cucumber and yogurt sambal, chutneys.
Eat occasionally: Deep-fried finger foods such as samosas and bhajias, fried breads such as chapati and puri, pappadums, parathas.
Thai
Healthy choices: Thai beef salad, satays, dry curries, stir-fry meat, chicken or seafood with vegetables, clear hot and spicy prawn soup (tom yarn goong), grilled chicken satays, jasmine rice.
Eat occasionally: Coconut-based curries such as Thai green curry, deep-fried finger foods such as crab cakes and spring rolls, crispy fried noodles.

What Is Tofu Made Of?

Tofu also called as 'bean curd' is a soy product which is a very nutritional and healthy food. This originated in South-East Asian countries. Till date many people lack knowledge on this product and should read on to know more and start making it a part of the dietary intake.
This is made from soy milk. When milk is curdled, a cheese like product is obtained which tastes bland and this is tofu. This taste makes it suitable for preparing many recipes since it can absorb many flavors.
Fresh or dry soy is soaked in water and then ground to make a paste with a little water. This is then cooked and then strained to obtain soy milk. This is then curdled using coagulants and later it is pressed into soft blocks. The resultant whey is thrown away.
Tofu can be prepared in many ways like steaming, grilling, stir frying, sautéing, or baking. The calorific value of tofu differs based on the type of tofu like:
• Soft: It is more firm than silken variety and feels like Jello.
• Silken: This variety has the most water content in it, but it also has a creamy consistency. This is ideal for soups, spreads and dips. This can also substituted for cream cheese while preparing cheese-cakes.
• Firm: This retains its shape. It can be grilled, stir fried, scrambled, smoked, pickles and so on. Extra firm type of tofu can be used when preparing casseroles or stews.
In the Southeast Asian countries, there are many more types of tofu available, like fermented tofu, fried tofu, flavored tofu and sun-dried tofu.

Isoflavones and cognitive function in older women: the Soy and Postmenopausal Health

In a study to examines the effects of a dietary supplement of isoflavones on cognitive function in postmenopausal women, posted in PubMed, showed that i baseline, all women were cognitively intact; there were no significant differences by treatment assignment in age, education, depressed mood, or cognitive function (all P values > 0.10). Compliance was 98% and 97%, respectively, in the placebo and treatment groups; all women took at least 85% of their pills. The women in the treatment group did consistently better, both as compared with their own baseline scores and as compared with the placebo group responses at 6 months. Comparisons of percentage change in cognitive function between baseline and follow-up showed greater improvement in category fluency for women on active treatment as compared with the case of those on placebo (P = 0.02) and showed (nonsignificantly) greater improvement on the two other tests of verbal memory and Trails B. and suggest that isoflavone supplementation has a favorable effect on cognitive function, particularly verbal memory, in postmenopausal women.

Isoflavones, estrogenlike compounds naturally occurring in plant foods, might confer positive effects with fewer adverse effects, In the study to investigate whether soy protein with isoflavones improves cognitive function, bone mineral density, and plasma lipids in postmenopausal women, posted in PubMed, showed that this double-blind randomized trial does not support the hypothesis that the use of soy protein supplement containing isoflavones improves cognitive function, bone mineral density, or plasma lipids in healthy postmenopausal women when started at the age of 60 years or later.

They can range from light broths to heavy stew-like soups, which can make a meal in itself. Most oriental soups are served piping hot, which makes them ideal to warm up cold winter nights. In this article you will learn about some popular oriental soups which can spice up your winter meals.
Soups form an important part of the meal in the far east. Each country has its specialty soups using local ingredients and spices to impart a special flavour of its own. extra spicy soups such as the Thai Tom-yam-gung or pretty mild ones like the dashi stock based Japanese soups are within the range of oriental soups.Given below is a list of popular oriental soups which can spice up your everyday winter dinners.
  • Chicken Noodle Soup- A Chinese soup, which is a meal in itself uses chicken, chicken stock, noodles and greens with flavourings such as soy sauce and dry sherry. This could be made in no time with shop bought canned chicken stock and fresh noodles.You could even use dried noodles and chicken stock cubes or powder if you do not have access to fresh noodles and canned stock. Pretty mild when compared to some of the spicier oriental soups.
  • Japanese Dashi stock based soups- Fresh seasonal vegetables, tofu (bean curd), meats and seafood are barely cooked in steaming hot light Dashi stock flavoured with soya sauce and mirin. Sometimes noodles are added to give volume.The light versions are a good starter for oriental themed meals, while the heavier versions with a higher proportion of solids are a meal by themselves.
  • Steamboats- A vessel with a hot coal filled funnel,and a trough surrounding it, which holds boiling stock is the basis for the steamboat, which is popular among many cultures in South East Asia. Thinly sliced meat, tofu and vegetables are dipped into the stock in small wire strainers by the diners and the remaining stock is eaten with noodles at the end of the meal. This is a meal in itself and is not for someone who is in a hurry.
  • Pho-Gha- A Vietnamese well-flavored beef broth with coriander and other spices in which vegetables and thinly sliced beef is cooked, ideal with steaming white rice or noodles as a complete meal.
  • Tom-Yang-Gung-A spicy sour Thai soup of seafood and vegetables,cooked with coconut milk is ideal for dinner with steaming hot rice. The spice comes from tiny chillies and the sourness from lime juice.
  • Laksa-Lemak- A filling soup flavored with spices such as lemon grass, galangal, ginger flowers, Vietnamese mint, chillies and turmeric,it contains seafood, vegetables and noodles. This is thickened with coconut cream and can make a meal in itself. It is popular throughout Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
  • Soto-Ayam- A spicy chicken soup of Indonesian origin,which goes well with steamed rice to make a complete meal. Soto Kambing is the version made with mutton.
  • Lentil soup- Indian lentil soup is quite filling as it contains a puree of red lentils spiced with garlic, ginger, turmeric, cummin and other spices. Comparatively mild to most South East Asian soups, this goes well with toasted Pita bread or Naan bread strips for a light dinner or lunch.
Although preparing many of these soups from scratch can be quite time-consuming,many of the spice mixes are readily available in most stores in the west, which cuts down considerably on the time required for preparation. Coconut milk either in cream or powder form and many of the vegetables are also freely available in Asian stores or even decent super markets.This makes preparation of oriental soups a breeze for the super-busy housewife who needs something different to warm up cold winter nights.

Vascular protection by dietary polyphenols

Consumption of polyphenol-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and beverages derived from plants, such as cocoa, red wine and tea, may represent a beneficial diet in terms of cardiovascular protection, According to the study by Université Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg, posted in PubMed, epidemiological studies demonstrate a significant inverse correlation between polyphenol consumption and cardiovascular risk. Among the numerous plausible mechanisms by which polyphenols may confer cardiovascular protection, improvement of the endothelial function and inhibition of angiogenesis and cell migration and proliferation in blood vessels have been the focus of recent studies. These studies have indicated that, in addition to and independently from their antioxidant effects, plant polyphenols (1) enhance the production of vasodilating factors [nitric oxide (NO), endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF) and prostacyclin] and inhibit the synthesis of vasoconstrictor endothelin-1 in endothelial cells; and (2) inhibit the expression of two major pro-angiogenic factors, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) in smooth muscle cells.
